The most economical cars in town are actually small diesel cars. Hybrid cars can’t beat them. The car with the lowest consumption is French.

What does diesel mean? Who invented the diesel engine?

Diesel engines are diesel engines. Diesel fuel originates from experiments conducted by German scientist and inventor Rudolf Diesel on his compression ignition engine that he invented in 1892.

In 1900, the French company Otto built the first diesel engine for use with crude oil. The engine actually ran on peanut oil. Before diesel was standardized, diesel engines usually ran on cheap oils, mixtures of several fuels: petrol, kerosene, canola, or lube oil.

The introduction of diesel engines for motor vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz OM 138 in the 1930s meant that higher quality fuels with suitable ignition characteristics were needed.

TOP diesel cars with low consumption

The range of these new cars is the one declared by the manufacturers, therefore it is not the entire range. However, the list includes the most economical diesel cars on the market.

These diesel engines in production have the lowest urban consumption and the lowest combined consumption.

Note: The ranking is made taking into account the lowest urban consumption.
