The authorities in Alba county announced that, in Sebes, the foundation stone of a factory that will produce electric motors that will equip the new generation of Mercedes EQ cars, fully electric models, has been laid.
Star Assembly, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz AG, will expand its product portfolio to include the assembly of electric power units for the all-electric Mercedes EQ models from 2025.

“Today’s event is more than a new investment, representing the evolution of the local economy towards electrification and towards new technologies, Alba County taking this step into the future alongside one of the largest and most appreciated brands worldwide.
The realization of this investment was possible thanks to the honest partnership between the investor, the Alba County Council, the Sebea City Hall, and the central authorities.
The construction of the new factory in Sebes confirms the importance of Alba county in the global production chain of the big companies in the automotive field, guaranteeing a sustainable development and a safe perspective for jobs in this area”, said the Alba authorities.

The new production hall will have an area of approximately 30,000 square meters and will house the assembly and logistics functions. Construction will be carried out on the current site of the Star Assembly factory.
Officials believe that the investment in the new factory for Mercedes EQ electric propulsion units in Romania is due to the workforce in Alba county.
„The decision to continue investing in Sebes, in a new production unit that will produce elements for fully electric vehicles, confirms the value of human resources in Alba county and the importance of the dual education system, which Alba county has promoted in the last 10 years.
Today’s event is the best proof that the strategies of the Alba County Council converge with those of the investment environment and that together we adapt to the future. We will continue to be a reliable partner both for the business environment and for the central administration, and we will continue to do everything in our power to generate development and progress in Alba.
We want to do this because every family deserves it, every person in Alba county, who must have the conditions here that will allow him to develop materially and spiritually and not to want to leave the county or the country ”, said Ion Dumitrel, the president of the Alba County Council.
The city that will ban taxi cars with combustion engines
The new facility will be carbon-neutral. For its energy supply, the company relies entirely on renewable energies.
The history of Mercedes’ presence in Alba begins in 1995 when UM Cugir produced the first gears for Mercedes. Later, a Romanian-German joint company was formed in Cugir, to which the Alba County Council also provided 4 hectares of land, its production developing and diversifying.
In 2009, the decision was made to establish the gearbox factory in Sebes which, until today, has produced 1 million gearboxes, exported all over the world, almost every second Mercedes car produced in recent years is equipped with gearbox gears manufactured in Alba county.

In 2019, Daimler’s subsidiary in Romania, Star Assembly, officially started production of the 8G-DCT eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. To integrate this new product into the transmission portfolio, Daimler built two new production halls in Sebes, with an area of approximately 54,000 square meters.
Founded in 2013, Star Assembly is responsible for assembling several types of gearboxes for today’s global Mercedes-Benz production network.
